The Amish Home offers solid hardwood furniture, built-to-order, in your choice of wood and stain. Below is a basic guide to the wood species offered. Visit our showroom to see samples of each species & finish on our furniture.
OUR CLASSIC SPECIES
RED OAK
Red oak is one of the most popular hardwoods for timber production in North America. It is known for its open grain, with a traditional, coarse-textured look, it offers durability and strength to stand up to years of day-to-day living.
BROWN MAPLE
Cut from the same tree that produces the delicious syrup for weekend pancake breakfasts, brown maple has become increasingly popular for furniture. Mostly distributed from eastern North America, brown maple is a smooth grained hardwood with distinctive patterns from board to board.
CHERRY
Cherry is a smooth, even grained hardwood known for its warm, rich color. Cherry may have some mineral streaks, pitch pockets, or sapwood. It will mellow and darken with age.
QUARTERSAWN WHITE OAK
Quartersawn describes a way of cutting oak logs into quarters to create distinctive grain patterns, including figure flakes, fine lines, pin stripes, leafy grains and watery figures. This cut is traditionally used on mission-style furniture and antiques.

WALNUT
Ranging in color from light to deep brown, walnut is a popular choice for mid-century modern and contemporary styles. It is dense and straight-grained with a course texture. Walnut makes up less than 1% of the commercially available hardwoods, and thus is our highest-priced species. Look to our rustic walnut to help control costs.
HICKORY
With tan-to-brown heartwood and nearly-white sapwood, hickory is easily recognizable by its distinctive striped appearance. It is a tight-grained hardwood that offers extreme strength and resiliency – perfect for heavy everyday use.
HARD MAPLE
With a fine, uniform texture, hard maple finishes smoothly and offers superior durability. Its hardness causes it to reject stain, thus it is only sold in a natural finish. The naturally light color makes it a great choice for casual furniture styles.
ELM
Truly a distinctive choice, elm features a unique interlocking grain pattern in varying shades of light and dark browns. Because of the intensity of the grain pattern, elm is typically used on a table top with an onyx base, or other two-tone variations. Fun fact: Our Amish builders all pronounce it as “el-em.”
RUSTIC VARIETIES
In addition to these species, we also offer rustic versions of our cherry, hickory, quartersawn white oak, and walnut.
While similar in appearance to their top-grade counterparts, these rustic varieties will feature burls, pits, and pin holes.
These marks add to the unique character of your furniture, and do not affect the structure.
