What's New at The Amish Home

It’s been a while since we’ve posted to our blog. After several years of unpresented demand for our American-crafted furniture, I’d like to share some updates from our builders, our newest product introductions, and some changes made here in our store.

We all know that the past three years have been difficult for small businesses, and smart businesses had to be flexible, sometimes innovative, to survive & thrive. This is certainly true of our Amish builders. For example, brothers Ivan & Roy were our store’s primary china cabinet builder since we launched our business in 2002, and about 10 years ago they began building bedroom furniture. Once the home improvement boom began and lead times stretched past 8 months, the brothers determined the best option was to consolidate & streamline their business. Bedrooms were more popular, so they discontinued the entire china cabinet line. At the same time, their neighbor Mervin was finding success in his newest styles with on-trend features like live edges, sliding barn doors, and wine display options. We’ve worked with Mervin for years – his breadbox cabinets were very popular about 15 years ago – so it was an easy decision to chose him as our primary china cabinet builder. You can see his Canterbury Hutch & Settler’s Ridge Buffet in our showroom.

Other builders found success by expanding their express-ship options. By creating certain standard combinations, the builders can quickly crank out identical items that they then finish-to-order. Builder Ervin expanded his Small Spaces Express dining collection, now offering six tables & seven chairs in as few as six weeks (see store for updated timeline.) Similarly, Jonas is offering two Express bedroom groups, and Nelson & Elmer each have Express living room tables available.

Like always, our store keeps bringing in new styles and displays. Some of our exciting new displays include reclaimed barnwood furniture and cypress Adirondack chairs & porch rockers. We’ve also been showing more walnut furniture, as well as expanding into wormy maple, hickory, and elm.

We’ve also had some staff changes in the store. I’m Chelsea – many of you are already familiar with me. I began working here as a part-time salesperson in 2010 as I completed my bachelor’s degree in Interior Design. After graduation, I took on a full time role with responsibilities including web management and social media, purchasing, and store design. In 2021 I took over the role of General Manager. We’re also very lucky to have our lead salesperson Matt, who joined our team a few years ago. Matt’s taken over much of our customer service and has been especially fantastic with post-delivery follow-up. Most of our recent google reviews mention him by name. We’ll be publishing some of his blogs soon, so make sure to look out for them! And of course we can’t forget about Marilyn, who has been with our store since we opened over 20 years ago. She’s still here part-time and is beloved by our customers.
