Before you can pick your TV stand, you need to know what size range you’re looking for. This will be determined by the size of your TV, as well as the size of the room. One of the most common questions our customers ask is, “”What size TV will this fit?” It’s important for you to know the actual dimensions of the TV you’ll be using. The size on the box refers to the diagonal length of the screen, and doesn’t directly relate to the size of the actual TV itself. The size of the TV may be affected by speakers, a control panel, or an exceptionally wide bezel, or frame. The point is, the advertised screen size will only tell you so much about the actual TV width, so make sure you know the size of your actual TV.

The width of your TV stand in relationship to the width of the TV is a matter of personal choice. Most people would not chose a stand that’s less wide than the TV itself.

The Heirwod Traditional TV Stand is shown in brown maple

In general, you want your TV stand to be at least 6” wider than the TV, or wider if you are choosing to add any decorative accents on the stand.

What about the height? Generally speaking, we have high and low TV stands. The low TV stands are all around 24” high (give or take an inch or two) while the high TV stands are generally about a foot taller. Whether you’ll be hanging the TV on the wall, or placing it directly on top of a TV stand, a good general rule of thumb is to place the TV so that its middle is even with your line of sight. This will vary according to your height and the style of your seating but, generally speaking, it will be about 42” above the floor. Thus, for comfort’s sake, a big-screen TV should almost always be paired with a low TV stand.

A smaller TV is likely best on a taller stand, especially if it won’t be hung on the wall. A taller TV stand will likely lend more storage, and it will look better in a more formal room.

Of course, a TV isn’t a stand-alone item, and you’ll need to consider your various components when selecting the right stand. Even the simplest set-up will likely require a cable box, while other homes may have DVD players, VCRs, streaming-media boxes, video game consoles, speakers, and so on. Furthermore, you may have a collection of media, peripherals, and/or accessories to plan for, as well. Most things controlled with a remote will need to either be placed in an open space or behind glass, while concealed storage is often preferable for miscellaneous items. Our many styles offer various combinations of open shelves, drawers, and wood or glass doors & drop-fronts.

Corner TV Stands

There are several reasons why placing the TV in a corner may be preferable. Depending on the size & shape of your room, you may find it maximizes limited floor space, or perhaps it allows the TV to angle for a wider viewing range. No matter what your reason, it is never preferable to use a straight TV stand angled in a corner. You’ll end up with the TV stand sticking out too far into the room, with a lot of wasted “dead” space behind it.

Corner TV stands are designed with many of the same options as our flat-wall TV stands. It’s still important to consider the size and needed storage.

When selecting a corner TV stand, it is important to understand how the dimensions are communicated. In addition to giving a width and a depth, we typically can also give a “wall space” dimension. This measures the length of space along the wall, coming out from the corner, that is needed to accommodate the TV stand. It is a much more reliable way of measuring than trying to measure 45° angles in the corner of your room.

Corner TV Stand dimensions

But what if you need a corner TV stand now and a flat wall stand later, or vice versa? Perhaps you rearrange your room seasonably, or maybe you’re considering a renovation. Flat wall and corner TV stands are designed for their specific uses. We do have one special collection, called the “Interchange” collection, which is designed to work on either a flat wall or in a corner. Because it’s made to be movable, it comes standard on casters.

TVs can present a design challenge. How do you place it in an optimal spot for viewing without making it the focal point of the room? An easy answer is to put it in a bigger piece of furniture. By framing the TV with decorative items, or hiding it inside a cabinet, the big black box becomes less imposing in your room.

Many come with an adjustable shelf for above the TV, allowing for extra personalization & giving the impression that the unit was custom built for your TV. We can also built similar units for corner spaces.
